Involvement In Education

  • Started out working with the Monroeville Elementary School as President of the PTA
  • After moveing back to Beatrice (1974) got involved with the Beatrice Elementary School and J. F. Shields after seeing the physical conditions of these two schools. Began taking pictures of the school facilities and submitting letters to the editor of the Monroe Journal in an effort to make the public aware of the plight of these schools.
  • My fight for teachers and personnel began with the dismissal of Barbar Turner from the faculty of J. f. Shields. This fight went all the way to the Alabama Supreme Court, dealing with the tenure law and Mrs. Turner won in this case.
  • I represented (plaintiffs) Monroe County, along with Dr. Neolin Criag, Mr. H. B. Williams and 25 poorer schools in Alabama, in the three-year battle in the courts with the landmark "Alabama Coalition for Equity Suit" We won the case and set a new era in equal education funding for all schools in Alabama.
  • When the Alabama Department of Education recommended the closing of Monroe Sr. High School in Lower Peachtree, four member of the Monroe County School Board voted yes. I voted no. This started the fight for several months to over a year to keep that school open. Working with Pacers Org. we won the battle to keep the school open and it is still open today.
  • Help work on the book, "Title I in Alabama: The Struggle to Meet Basic Needs" (1999)- the report to the Citizen's Commission on Civil Right. Many school in Monroe County and the Nation get funds from the Title 1 Program.
  • Fought for the School Attendance Zone to keep students in the schools in their district.
  • Fought for the discipline and suspension of teacher who were arrested or involved in drugs in violation of school policies.
  • Fought for the construction of the W. R. Averett Gymnasium. After the construction of the Gym, there were no money appropriated for seating. I went out and abtained the money for the bleachers through donations from Sen. Hank Sanders, Rep. Thomas Jackson and Vanity Fair.
  • Instrumental in the school traffic lights being placed at J.F. Shields Hwy 21.
  • Wrote many letters to US and State Sentors and Representatives in the fight for education in Monroe County Schools.
  • Help write the first 21st Century Grant in 1998. It was through a program called the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. This grant rewritten each year is still a powerfull part of funding for Monroe Schools.
  • Appointed to the National School Boards Association for Federal Relations Network. Repersentive for Monroe County Board Education in Washington D. C. conference, for Alabama schools.
  • Has been responsible for chartering the spectator bus to all Area and State Play-off Games since 1992.
  • Is responsible for getting frames and putting up all the J.F Shields Championship Pictures in the W.R. Averett Gym.
  • Has been a member and worked even today with PACERS Program since 1992. A program with the University of Alabama which works with Rural School to implement programs with schools and students. Served as a Board Member of PACERS at one time. This program worked with Beatrice Elementary and J. F. Shields. Installed all computer wireing for J.f, Shields, Beatrice Elementary, Monroe Sr. High School in Co-Op With PACERS.
  • Served as President of the Shields Athletic Club from its inception until 2008.
  • Started the Beatrice Little League and help build the Facilities and Field at Beatrice Elementary School, J. F Shields in 1993, in cooperation with Mr. Rodie ruffin and the Cooperative Extension Office and the community.
  • Started The Beatrice Area Youth Basketbal League-1990- (YMCA). Now call the Tall Program at Beatrice Elementary School.
  • Implemented Prayer at Monroe County School Board meeting.
  • Implemented with George Elbrecht, School board holding meeting in different area besides Resource Center. All jobs opening posted & Adds in local news paper.
  • I am dedicated to the educational well-being of all chlidren. Having a daughter who teaches math in Monroe County and a daughter -in-law who teaches math in Montgomery County. I am well aware of the many problems faced by teachers and administration in our education system from my years of working for education. I am very much aware of the finacial shortfall in our schools throughout this state and nation. I am well aware of the problem of homes in preping children to learn at school and the many problems disp. and behavior.
  • I Pledge to do all in my power to ease some of the burdens faced by out students and educators. I Pledge to work for a joint relationship between the schools and the community.
